Ten three-year-olds remain in contention for Saturday’s 2016 Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Rosehill Gardens; offering punters exceptional value from a betting standpoint and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
Group 1 winner Prized Icon remains an outright $3.70 favourite in 2016 Gloaming Stakes betting markets with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of High Mist ($4) and Swear ($4.80).
Will Prized Icon justify favouritism and win the 2016 Gloaming Stakes, or will one of his rivals post an upset?
Godolphin colt Honeywine undoubtedly faces his biggest career test to date in the Gloaming Stakes, but carries great form into the race and appears as though he will relish a step up in distance. Trialling well in the lead-up to his spring return, the Street Cry colt ran fifth in the Mater Dei School Maiden Plate (1400m) first-up on August 13th before charging home to win the Corrimal RSL Maiden Plate (1500m) on September 6th. Honeywine has the notable advantage of James McDonald in the saddle and will leave from the rails draw in the Gloaming Stakes 2016.
High Mist ($4)
The Chris Waller-trained High Mist carries winning form into the Gloaming Stakes and could very well receive the run of the race from barrier 2, with Glyn Schofield in the saddle. Running fourth in the Hyland Race Colours 2.y.o Handicap (1400m) on July 16th, the son of High Chaparral ran second in another Rosehill minor over 1500m before placing a close second to Swear in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) on September 3rd. Having returned to winning form in the Schweppes BM67 (1600m) on September 14th, Waller has elected to run High Mist in the Gloaming Stakes rather than the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) on Saturday, which could suggest his confidence in this option.
Prized Icon ($3.70)
Prized Icon was a standout for James Cummings in autumn and undoubtedly has the class to be right in the finish of the Gloaming Stakes on Saturday. Finishing in the minors in each of the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m), Group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m), Prized Icon broke through for a maiden race win in the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m), before repeating the dose in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) only one week later. Resuming this time for fourth in the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m), the More Than Ready colt failed to make an impressive amongst open company in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) but will enjoy a return to three-year-old racing on Saturday, and will leave from the ideal barrier 3.
